The Hook

Well, the 2011 baseball season is coming to an end.
For Trout Johnson of the Barrels the season ended along time ago.
I based the pitcher on a bunch of former NY Yankees
1) David Wells
2) Sparky Lyle
      3) Fred Flintstone

The manager is based on the great Casey Stangel with a touch of Joe Torre with his hands in his back pockets.

The Walking Dead

In honor of the season 2 of The Walking Dead I resurrected  this illustration I've posted before.
Not thinking I promised my son I would watch something else with him on the same time. No problem I'll just watch the premiere another night.

Mary Blair and some fall cleaning...

My wife was doing a little fall cleaning yesterday when she uncovered this beauty of a book.
It was pass down to her as a child.

Mary Blair did the cover art and the interior art was illustrated by Al Dempster and Bill Justice.
Copyright of the book is from 1947

Are You Related to A Rock Star

Just about this time last year I got a call from  Scholastic asking if I would like to illustrate a book titled "Are You Related To a Rock Star".
I'm a big music fan so this was a fun project.
What rock star would I like to related to? Geez... I love the Beatles , Paul McCartney and George Harrison would be a nice start.
Being from NJ I would have to throw in Bruce Springsteen... and a few guys from the Fountains of Wayne!
How about you?

The Blob!

Saturday, I spent a great night listening to music from friends Don Henry, Craig Bickhardt and JD Malone at Steel City in Phoenixville PA.
To my great surprise right up the street from the venue was the original Colonial Theater from the 1958 movie The Blob! What a thrill to see it alive well and still running!
Also if
Don http://www.donhenry.com/
Craig http://www.craigbickhardt.com/
JD http://www.jdmalone.com/
are in your area check them out!

The Waymores

This weekend I got to spend a little time with my buddy Don Henry from Nashville TN.
Don is one of my favorite singer/songwriters, musicians and friends.
He has a long list of musicians that has recorded his songs and a fine collection of his own records.
He just teamed up with 2 other talented singer/songwriters from Nashville Sally Barris and Tom Kimmel as The Waymores.
Friday they preformed at  the famous Godfrey Daniels folk club in Bethlehem PA.

Inspired by the show I came home and did this for their song "I Ain't Afraid of Work".
Next for this is to put it in After Effects and make it move and sing!!!!

If The Waymores are ever in your area do yourself a favor and go see them!

Rivers,Roads & Rails

Hey!
Over the weekend I spotted  in Barnes and Noble the latest game illustrations I did for Rivers,Roads & Rails from Ravensburger.
The original RR&R illustration was based on Europe with old styled trains, cars and buildings.
I was asked to modernize it and make it for the US market.
Rivers,Roads & Rails is a card game linking one card to a center card and creating your own network.
It was a bit of a challenge.  I had to work on a grid and make sure each and every river, road & rail matched perfectly to be cut into cards.
Well, I pick up a copy and now I need to find a little time to try it out....

OPENING DAY!

Opening day!
I love baseball.
In my next life I would like to play first base for the New York Mets.
One of my biggest thrills in my illustration career was when I received a call from Major League Baseball.
I had the honor of doing illustrations for the 2008 World Series and and Playoff programs.
Each program is in the Baseball Hall of Fame! So in a round about way I made it in!

I still pinch myself thinking about that day.

Baseball moves to the West Coast
K Rod vs Bobby Thigpen save record

Back in 2008 I had the plan of creating my own baseball card series of a fictional team called the Hoboken Hackers.
The idea was to send these oversized promotional postcards (8.5x5.5)  as a mailer.
The one and only card I made was  the Hackers aging slugger Crash McGee.
I sent one to an art director at MLB. Mailers do work!
